June is national migraine awareness month and at Bite Align, we want to educate our patients about one of the top causes of frequent migraines and headaches: temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJ). TMJ often goes misdiagnosed which is why those suffering from migraines take years before they can find a treatment that works.
If you’re struggling with migraines, we recommend your first action is to visit us for an evaluation. In the meantime, you might also find relief from your migraines and headaches by making small changes to your diet.
Foods to Eat for Migraines
One of the easiest ways to help relieve your frequent migraines and headaches is by eating softer foods. If TMJ is the cause of your headaches and migraines, the source of the pain is in your jaw. The headache is usually from jaw tension or referred pain so to treat your migraines; you have to go to the source of the problem-the temporomandibular joint. By eating soft foods, you can take some of the pressure and tension away from the jaw joint that’s causing your headaches.
Stay away from anything too difficult to chew. Instead eat a variety of steamed or cooked vegetables, beans, fish, scrambled eggs, soft fruit without skins, yogurt, mashed potatoes, and smoothies. The softer your diet, the better it is for your symptoms.
Foods to Avoid for Migraines
On the other hand, you should avoid any foods that require you to chew too much. Chewing too much won’t give your jaw muscles a break and therefore won’t help relieve frequent headaches anytime soon. Try to avoid foods such as apples, corn on the cob, chips, raw carrots, crunchy cereal, toffee, ice, nuts, steak, candy bars, gum, caramels, or other chewy candy.
If you suffer from frequent migraines, you’re likely to try any type of treatment. At Bite Align, we first recommend for patients who suffer from frequent migraines or headaches to visit us for an evaluation. This will help us rule out TMJ as the cause. If TMJ is the cause, we will design a personalized treatment plan to help prevent migraines and other TMJ symptoms from occurring.
“With the right treatment plan in place, you can finally feel relief from your frequent migraines and other TMJ symptoms and finally feel like yourself again.”
