What Causes Snoring?

Why do you snore? The basic cause is anatomical: your airway isn’t wide enough. It might be wide enough during the day when you stand upright, but when you lie down, your muscles relax, and gravity pulls your airway down. This makes your airway narrower.

Breathing through a narrow airway creates a turbulent airflow. Think of the water going through a partly kinked garden hose. This turbulent airflow creates vibrations in your airway, and that’s what you hear.

Snoring can be caused by narrowing at any point in the airway, such as the nose, soft palate, or throat. The loudest and most serious occurs in your throat.

The Dangers

As we said, snoring is often portrayed as a joke, but it’s actually serious. A person might look like they’re sound asleep, but usually, they’re short on oxygen, which means they’re not sleeping well. This can lead to daytime sleepiness.

Sometimes, snoring is a sign of sleep apneaThis link leads to Sleep Apnea page. Sleep apnea causes some deadlyThis link leads to Sleep Apnea Dangers page conditions, including several fatal cardiovascular conditions. There is even some evidence it can cause some of these independently.
